Family reunification immigration is an immigration category in which a Canadian citizen or permanent resident sponsors a spouse, partner who has lived together for more than one year, dependent children and other family members to immigrate to Canada for the purpose of family reunification.
Parent/Grandparent Category. This category requires a two-step process: a sponsor eligibility review and an applicant eligibility review. The entire approval process is long and is the slowest of all the application categories, typically taking 4-6 years. The difference between this category and the spouse/dependent child category is that there is an income requirement for the sponsor and the applicant needs to meet the income requirement throughout the application approval process. If there is no stable income but only savings is not valid. For different municipalities and according to different family sizes (both those already in Canada and those proposed to come to Canada), the Department of Citizenship and Immigration has established a minimum cost of living (data updated every February). To be approved, the sponsor's income must be equal to or greater than the specified cost value.
